We have an active and world class research programme in many areas of pure and applied mathematics and in mathematics education. We provide supervision and training for PhD students at the highest levels. This website gives you more details about what is available, including research areas in which we have particular strengths.

If you are interested in a PhD in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, or have already started a PhD with us, Dr Graham Donovan, the Mathematics PhD advisor, is your first contact person within the Department. H eis familiar with the departmental-related issues, from finding a supervisor to submitting your final thesis manuscript.

Information for intending students

Thank you for your interest in the Mathematics PhD programnme. Before you begin the process of enrolling for a PhD in Mathematics, please read the following.

Issues that should be addressed at this stage are:

(a) Funding

All intending students should refer to the section on Scholarships and financial support for PhD students.

The student fees are are NZ$4,294 per year (except for foreign students who enrolled for the first time before 20 April 2005 in a Doctor of Philosophy programme at a New Zealand University).

(b) Supervision

Is there a member of the department whom you think would be suitable as your supervisor? Information about potential supervisors and their research interests can be found on the department's homepage, and is available from our PhD Advisor, Dr Graham Donovan.

(c) Eligibility

To register for a PhD an applicant must have obtained the equivalent of a New Zealand Masters Degree in Mathematics. The degree must contain a research component and it must be first class or second class division 1 or equivalent.

(d) Citizenship/Residency or Visa status

International students who do not have permanent residency or a student visa, can email immigration/visa enquiries to the International Office or check the requirements on the NZ Immigration Service website.

(e) English

Applicants must have IELTS Academic not lower than 6.5, and each band not lower than 6.0. Alternative requirements are listed here.

Enrolment

There are two steps to the process of enrolling in a PhD in Mathematics.

  • In a first instance, you need to contact the Department of Mathematics and apply for a provisional approval.
  • Once the Department has agreed to support your application, you need to go through the University of Auckland PhD admission procedure.
