Support provided by the Mathematics Department

Scholarships

The department will assist all PhD students with their scholarship applications.

Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships funded from outside the Department. This includes University Doctoral Scholarships, Bright Futures Scholarships, etc.

Similarly their supervisors are encouraged to apply for external research grants such as from the Marsden Fund or funds controlled by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology as such funds are likely to allow for support for PhD students. Students having success in such applications may receive supplements from some of the options listed below: they should discuss their needs with the PhD Advisor in the first instance.

Scholarship applications

For help with scholarship applications contact the PhD Advisor. He has access to a more extensive list of scholarships and experience with successful applications.

Teaching

Subject to financial constraints the Department may offer teaching duties to PhD students.

Tutors training

The Department provides some training for new teaching staff at the beginning of the academic year. All Assistance room and small group tutors, and student lecturers must attend (or show evidence of attending in previous years) these training sessions as part of their employment. For lecturers, past experience in teaching/tutoring or teacher/tutor training will suffice in lieu of the departmental training sessions.

Students may choose from the following teaching options

  • Nothing
  • Assignments marking
  • Small class tutoring
  • Computer Lab demonstration
  • Assistance room or one-to-one tutoring
  • Lecturing a quarter or a half of a course per semester (subject to HoD and supervisor's approval)

Lecturing duties

Lecturing duties include office hours, course-related meetings, assistance Room, and associated marking. They are detailed below. We will not allocate PhD students lecturing without evidence that they will do a good job at it. Such evidence may include tutoring or work in the Assistance Room. Subject to availability in the teaching programme, students may choose to spread their teaching duties over two or even three semesters, or concentrate them in a single term. At times it may be necessary to vary these options because of special circumstances.
