Computer System Regulations

The breaking of any of the following rules will result in disciplinary action. This may include a ban from the laboratories (even when assignments are due), loss of marks for assignments, or referral to the University Discipline Committee, with a consequent fine or expulsion from papers or from the University. Students should also refer to the University Computer System Regulations , and Disciplinary Regulations in the University Calendar.

Changes to these Regulations will be posted in the School's Laboratories.

For the purposes of these regulations -

School refers to the School of Mathematical and Information Sciences which includes the Departments of Computer Science, the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics.
Department refers to either the Department of Computer Science or the Department of Mathematics or the Department of Statistics.
Director is the person nominated by the Head of Department or the Director of the School of Mathematical and Information Sciences to be in control of the System.
System means any Computer system controlled and operated by the Council whether at the Computer Centre established in the University or elsewhere.
Computer System refers to any item of computing equipment or computer related equipment and includes the network connecting those items of equipment.

No Person Shall:

  1. use a Department's equipment for non-departmental work without prior permission;
  2. copy copyright software without lawful permission (In particular, unless authorised by the Director, use software provided by the Department on equipment not designated for that Department.);
  3. use unlicensed software on the School's equipment;
  4. act in a way likely to cause damage to equipment (e.g. equipment may not be opened up or peripherals disconnected, nor is the connection of non- Departmental equipment to the School's equipment or network permitted.);
  5. unlawfully remove equipment, diskettes, books, notes or any other item from any of the School's laboratories or commit any criminal offence in any of the School's laboratories;
  6. display or send obscene, racist, abusive or otherwise offensive material to any other person;
  7. play computer games in any of the School's laboratories;
  8. smoke, chew gum or consume food or drink in any of the School's laboratories (Smoke, food and drink can cause damage to equipment and diskettes.);
  9. use a login name other than the one(s) assigned to that person by the School or allow any other person to use that person's login name(s) to access one of the School's Systems without the express permission of the Director of that system;
  10. refuse to provide identification to staff if so requested whilst in any of the School's laboratories (If such proof of identification is not produced immediately the person may be asked to leave the laboratory .);
  11. fail to pay any charges incurred by the use of any login account that has been assigned to that person or any charges that can be attributed to the use of any System by that person;
  12. misuse the Booking System (e.g. A student may make a booking in a Department's Laboratory only for course work set by that Department. A student may not make a booking for another person or habitually fail to turn up for their bookings.).
