Community for Mathematics Content in Teaching

Programme

Topics

We will look at:

  • Use of game theory in taking penalty kicks in soccer
  • Applications of the Poisson distribution in predicting soccer

results

  • The basis of the Duckworth-Lewis system in cricket
  • Use of circle geometry in avalanche rescues
  • Matrix multiplication and tournaments
  • How scoring systems affect results.

If time allows we will look at more of the maths and stats that lie hidden beneath the surface of a variety of sports.

Time

The course runs for the four Thursday evenings from November 13th to December 4th – hopefully your seniors have left by then and you have time to think about yourself.

We meet in from 6:15 till 8:15 with a short break for pizza. The venue is Room 222 in the Science Centre building 303 near the corner of Princes and Wellesley Streets.

Seminar Room 222, 38 Princes Street, 2nd floor (Science Centre - Building 303).

Parking

Parking is available at $5 per night at the Owen Glenn building in Grafton Rd very near the intersection with Symonds St (about a 5 minute walk from the Science Centre where the workshops are run)
