BSc(Hons)/BA(Hons) in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics

Application and Admission process

  1. If you think you are eligible for a BSc(Hons) or a BA(Hons) in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, log onto the Student Services and apply for it (i.e. add the Honours plan to your plans of study). The general guidelines for admission at the University and Enrolment in new courses are outlined on our Admission and enrolment page.
Note. When you choose your plan, please specify at least one course you intend to take. This course can be MATHS 776A, the first half of the Honours dissertation. You could also include a couple of the courses you plan to take, as an indication of your future study plans.
  1. The Department, through the Postgraduate Advisor (Steve Taylor) will make an initial assessment and let the Faculty of Science know if you are eligible for Honours.
  2. If we have any concerns regarding your application, we'll get in touch with you - usually by email - so please make sure your contact details are correct.
  3. If all criteria are met, the Department will give their OK for your application, via the online Student Services. This approval needs to be validated by the Faculty of Science/Faculty of Arts.
  4. When the Faculty of Science/Arts approves your programme, a letter of offer of place will be issued. You need to accept this offer either in writing or online.
  5. You can now go online and pick up the courses you will be taking within your Honours programme.
  6. If the enrolment in a course is subject to approval by the Department, you will be waitlisted and the Postgraduate Advisor will approve your enrolment, if appropriate.
  7. Amongst your courses, you must have MATHS 776A in a semester and MATHS 776 B in your next Honours semester.

How to Enrol for the Honours dissertation

Any student enrolled in a BSc(Hons) or BA(Hons) in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics will have to undertake a 30 points supervised work leading to an Honours dissertation. It will be externally examined and assessed. Guidelines for writing your dissertation will be soon available on the website.

  1. To enrol in MATHS 776, you need to find a potential supervisor within the department and agree on a topic and on a research plan.
  2. An Honours dissertation form outlining the above is available online or from the Mathematics main office. You must fill this form in (click here for a .doc version), with the help of your supervisor(s) and have it signed by them. Your supervisor will also need to think who your external examiner and assessor will be.
  3. Please hand this form either to the Postgraduate Advisor Steve Taylor or to the Mathematics main office.
  4. Upon receipt of the Honours dissertation form, the department will check whether all the requirements are met and approve your enrolment in MATHS 776.
