Algebraic Thinking in Years 11, 12 and 13
From MathsDept
Department of Mathematics, 38 Princes Street, Auckland CBD
Convenor
Dr Judy Paterson
Participants
All interested teachers of Mathematics - or people who are interested in teaching and learning mathematics.
Programme
This course will be particularly useful to teachers who want to enhance their confidence in delivering the curriculum or to extend their teaching range.
Thinking is one of the key competencies in the new curriculum. Algebraic thinking enables us to use our insight into specific situations to generalise. This very powerful skill impacts directly on students’ ability to succeed in almost all areas of mathematics and statistics.
In the two workshops we will focus on:
- Connecting multiple representations of concepts – graphical, diagrammatic, algebraic – to enhance and develop understanding. For example we will look at visual representations of the sum of geometric series, geometric representations of the Newton-Raphson and bisection methods of solving equations numerically, differing representations of complex numbers.
- Exploring important concepts and the ways in which they can be used – for example the basis of logarithms, their connection to indices and their role as a tool in modelling power and exponential functions.
The focus is not on doing "tricky" excellence questions but on developing a sound understanding of the basic principles.
Dates and Time
Saturday 13th and Saturday 20th September from 10:30 - 3:15 with breaks for lunch and tea.
