November 2007

The Auckland Mathematical Association presents the MATHEMATICS DAY 2007:

September 2007

The Department has over 20 students on Summer Scholarships, about half funded by the Faculty and the others by the Department.

August 2007

A summary of courses and lecturers evaluations shows that this Department is achieving an average of 8.06 on all lecturer evaluations, and 7.68 on all course evaluations. Particularly notable are the averages for 100-level courses which are 8.29 and 8.08 respectively.

July 2007

From 17 to 22 July the Department hosted the pre-departure training camp of the NZ team which was heading to the :2007 International Mathematical Olympiad in Hanoi, Vietnam. The Deputy Leader of the NZ Team is Heather Macbeth, a senior undergraduate student in the Department, former team member and silver medalist. Several other members of the Department participated in this training camp.

New and revised postgraduate courses in Semester 2 2007

Our trial of tablet teaching is now completed and two reports one its successes and difficulties are being considered by our Academic Committee. Students are very positive about the use of tablets, but there are some operational difficulties.

A Group Theory Workshop was held in the Mathematics Department of the University of Auckland on 22-23 February 2007. All were welcome. The speakers included John Bray (London), Peter Brooksbank (Bucknell), Gerhard Hiss (Aachen), Derek Holt (Warwick), Charles Leedham-Green (London), Mike Newman (Canberra), Jozef Siran (Auckland).

April 2007

David Bryant demonstrated for the first time in New Zealand live remote teaching on the KAREN network using EVO (Enabling Virtual Organisations), to a graduate class in genomics at the University of Canterbury.

March 2007

As part of the Mathematics Education Unit Seminar Series (MESS), a Seminar entitled “School mathematics: content, processes, thinking, and the key competencies” was held on Friday 25 May. The speaker was Andy Begg, Associate Professor, School of Education, Auckland University of Technology.
