Mike is interested in semiotic analyses of gestures and
representations in learning mathematics, including links to the nature of
advanced mathematical thinking, the learning and teaching of algebra and
calculus, the transition from school to university and learning of
undergraduate mathematics, such as linear algebra. He also investigates the
role of teacher affective factors, including orientations and confidence, in
school and university teaching and professional development, often with an
emphasis on the use of digital technology. He has given invited research
seminars in a number of countries and is on the editorial boards of the Springer
international journals, Mathematics
Education Research Journal and Digital Experiences in Mathematics Education. He is also an Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Research in
Undergraduate Mathematics Education, published by Springer and led a survey
team for the 2012 International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME), on
the mathematical difficulties inherent in the transition from school to
university.
