Maths 150: Advancing
Mathematics 1
Maths 150 is the gateway to further mathematics courses for students
intending to major or minor in mathematics, statistics, physics,
economics, finance or mathematical biology. It gives an introduction to
the use of careful mathematical language and reasoning in the context of
the calculus of a single variable and of linear algebra in two, three
and higher dimensional spaces. Recommended preparation for MATHS 250.
Expected background: Students in Maths 150 are expected to
have at least 18 achievement credits in
Calculus at Level 3, with at least 6 of these at merit level
or better, or at least a B in CIE A2 Mathematics, or at least a B+ in
Maths 102, or a pass in Maths 108. Students
with excellent results in Statistics but marginal results in
Calculus may benefit from the Superstart book available at the Student
Resource Centre or from the corresponding course, Superstart
starting on
February 14th.
Prescribed texts for this course (and also for Maths 250 and
Maths 253 are:
Calculus (Early Transcendentals), 8th Edition, by Anton, Bivens
and Davis, and Contemporary Linear Algebra by Anton and Busby, both
published by Wiley.
