Research approvals committees and procedures

Some types of research activity require institutional approval with regard to ethics or safety or other regulatory requirements before they can proceed. This applies mainly to research involving human or animal subjects and/or the genetic modification of organisms.

Generally the onus is on the researcher to secure any necessary approvals before the research project begins, and before a research grant or contract supporting the research can be secured.

Applications for approval are made through one of a number of committees operated by the University of Auckland and the Ministry of Health:

Advice about the need and procedures for such institutional approval may be obtained from the University's Research Office on Extn 87956.
